My Friend is Sad is the second installment in the Elephant & Piggie series by award-winning author Mo Willems. This Learn to Read series just continues to delight both adults and children. Piggie and Gerald the Elephant are back to their roles: Piggie as the somewhat naive, optimistic little pig that she is and Gerald as more of the glass is half empty kinda guy (and comically melodramatic to boot).
In this story, Piggie happens upon a sad Gerald and goes about trying to cheer him up. After dressing up as a cowboy, clown and robot, Gerald still isn't happy. When Piggie comes out as herself, Gerald is finally happy: his friend is here! Gerald then begins to recount how he saw a clown, a coowboy and a robot! But none of these made him happy because Piggie wasn't there to share it with him.
Piggie little confused face is worth the price of admission! This is such a sweet story of friendship and feelings. As well as a terrific primer for your young reader, who will be reading it on his/her own after only a few shared readings. Pigeon fans: don't forget to check the end papers!
